Hon. Floyd H. Flake

Member of Congress - 6th District

1035 Longworth Building

Washington, DC 20515

Dear Floyd:

On behalf of the Northeast Queens Jewish Community Council [NEQJCC], I write to follow-up on my attached August 28, 1995 letter urging to co-sign the letter (also attached) to U.S. Regional Parole Commissioner John R. Simpson in support of parole for Jonathan Pollard. Your communication to President Clinton, urging our President to commute Mr. Pollard's sentence to time served, would also be helpful.

The NEQJCC, as indicated in our August letter to you and all of our correspondence in support of the release of Mr. Pollard, does not support any acts of espionage. In the case of Jonathan Pollard, we have consistently called attention to the unfairness of the harsh sentence for Mr. Pollard. No other individual convicted of espionage on behalf of one of our allies has ever received anything close to the harsh prison term already endured by Mr. Pollard. Already, Jonathan Pollard has been in prison more that half of his adult life. On many occasions, he has expressed profound remorse for betraying our country's trust. While a conviction in his case may be appropriate, the sentence remains disproportionately harsh.

On humanitarian grounds, we urge you to co-sign the letter authored by your colleagues, Members of Congress Deutsch and Fox, urging his parole and to contact President Clinton to urge him to commute Mr. Pollard's sentence.

Thank you for your attention to this important concern. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

COREY B. BEARAK
President
