CONDEMN JEFFRIES REMARKS AT QUEENS COLLEGE 11/13

Corey Bearak, the President of the Northeast Queens Jewish Community Council, and the Baysiders Against Anti-Semitism made a joint statement saying, "We urge our elected officials and community leaders to force the removal of Leonard Jeffries from his tenured position at City College. Demagoguery is not legitimate speech and anti-Semitism has no place in the classroom."

Jeffries spoke three hours at the Queens College Student Union at an event sponsored by the Third World Alliance and co-sponsored by the Student Association.

In a September 1991 NEQJCC letter to Chancellor W. Ann Reynolds, Bearak wrote: "Academic freedom ought not to protect any individual who does not meet the basic qualifications in scholarship demanded of any other University Professors and departmental chairs." A review of Mr. Jeffries status based on the usual traditional standards of scholarship, teaching and administrative ability should provide a clear and convincing case for his removal as a departmental chair, a revocation of his tenure and termination of his position on City College's faculty.
