SHULMAN INSTALLS BEARAK TO 3rd TERM AS NEQJCC PRES., LUPKIN RECEIVES AWARD FOR SERVICE; GIRGENTI KEYNOTES

Governor Mario M. Cuomo's Director of Criminal Justice, Richard H. Girgenti, delivered the keynote address at the installation of Corey B. Bearak to a third term as President of the Northeast Queens Jewish Community Council [NEQJCC], this past Sunday morning, January 23, 1994 at Bellerose Jewish Center in Floral Park.  Mr. Bearak presented the NEQJCC's award for "Distinguished Service to the Northeast Queens Community" to Anne Lupkin.  Queens Borough President Claire Shulman performed the installation of the NEQJCC's officers and honored Mrs. Lupkin, a Bayside resident and former NEQJCC Executive Director.  City Councilman Sheldon S. Leffler, chair of the Council's Public Safety Committee, introduced Mr. Girgenti.

Mrs. Shulman praised Mr. Bearak's leadership and contributions to Queens, noting his involvement with many community and civic organizations.  In addition to Mr. Bearak, who serves as Counsel/ Chief of Staff to Councilman Leffler, the Borough President installed Joseph M. Varon as First Vice President, Al Levy as Second Vice President, Anne Kirsch as Third Vice President, Marcia Federman as Recording Secretary and Susan Fogel as Treasurer.  Mr. Varon chaired the Installation Committee which included Helene Zaro, Milton Prane and Max Singer.
Mrs. Lupkin joined the Council over five years ago.  She currently serves as Director of Adult Education at the Samuel Field/ Bay Terrace YM & YWHA and as NEQJCC Executive Director Emeritus.

An association of religious, education, fraternal and community organizations, the NEQJCC covers Bay Terrace, Bayside, Bellerose, Douglaston, Floral Park, Glen Oaks, Hollis Hills, Little Neck, New Hyde Park, Oakland Gardens and Queens Village (north).

Council projects include neighborhood development, fostering intergroup understanding and building a multi-cultural coalition. The Council combats anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination.  The NEQJCC also sponsors forums with major public figures, Jewish Cultural events, open discussions with local Rabbis and represents community concerns.

Upcoming Northeast Queens Jewish Community projects and events include a Community-Wide Safety Fair and the Council's Annual Legislative Breakfast, co-sponsored by the Queens Jewish Community Council, which will feature Board of Education President Carol Gresser on April 17 at the Samuel Field Y.

A UJA/Federation agency, the NEQJCC works closely with the Queens Jewish Community Council, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater New York, the Metropolitan New York Coordinating Council on Jewish Poverty and the Samuel Field/ Bay Terrace YM-YWHA.
