HEALTH EXPO '90
On Sunday, May 20, 1990, the Northeast Queens Jewish Community Council
and the Health and Physical Education Department of the Samuel Field YM&YWHA
co-sponsored a Health
Expo and Blood Drive which was free and open to the community. Many
prestigious institutions donated their time, equipment and medical
personnel to make this day a huge success. In excess of 150 men, women and
children participated in this Health Expo devoted to preventive health
screening and the positive feedback was overwhelming.
The following are some statistics that give an indication of how truly
successful this Sunday was:
1) The Guttman Breast Diagnostic Institute's mobile mammography van
examined 46 women.
2) The Lexington Hearing and speech Center van tested the hearing of 48
people.
Booth Memorial Medical Center sent a doctor to do vision acuity screening.
3) 16 young people had blood drawn to see if they were carriers of Tay
Sachs Disease. This test was done by a doctor and a genetic counselor from
the National Tay Sachs and Allied Disease Association and was analyzed by
Kingsbrook Medical Center.
4) 100 people volunteered to donate blood and 40 pints were actually
collected.
5) With personnel from Long Island Jewish Medical Center, 56 people had
their pressure checked and were weighed and measured.
6) 15 children were screened for speech and language development by
personnel from Adelphi University.
7) Deepdale General Hospital screened for cholesterol levels, tested for
peripheral arterial disease and gave nutritional counseling.
8) The Queens County Dental Society checked for oral cancer.
This was the second year that this event was held, and, it appears as
word of the quality and variety of our Health Expo spreads, an increasing
number of community residents avail themselves of the opportunity to
participate in diagnostic screening.
[The 1991 Health Expo will take place on Sunday, June 9, 1991]
