November 8, 1993 Constance Cooke Dear Connie: On behalf of the Northeast Queens Jewish Community Council [NEQJCC], I write to urge the Queens Borough Public Library [QBPL] to consider opening more branches on Sundays. Many Northeast Queens residents observe the sabbath Friday through Saturday evenings. An extension of service on weekends only serves these people if some branches near their homes open on Sundays. An association of community, education, fraternal and religious organizations, the NEQJCC covers Bay Terrace, Bayside, Bellerose, Douglaston, Floral Park, Glen Oaks, Hollis Hills, Little Neck, New Hyde Park, Oakland Gardens and Queens Village (north). QBPL branches in northeast Queens include Bay Terrace, Bayside, Bellerose, Douglaston, Glen Oaks, North Hills, Queens Village and Windsor Park. Nearby branches include Auburndale, Hollis and Fresh Meadows. Last June, the City Council and the Mayor approved funding to open all QPBL branches six days. The NEQJCC strongly supported this extension of library service. The City Council included "terms and conditions" that six day service be restored by the end of the current fiscal year (June 30, 1994) but no less that one-half of the library's branches would open by January 1, 1994. In September the QPBL extended library service in advance of the January 1 deadline. The NEQJCC applauds this QBPL effort, which includes Sunday service at the Bayside and Queens Village Branches from November 7 to May 22 and asks that Sunday service be expanded in northeast Queens when the QBPL completes the expansion to six-day service. Northeast Queens branches open five days include Douglaston [closed Fridays and Sundays], Glen Oaks [closed Thursdays and Sundays], North Hills [closed Saturdays and Sundays] and Windsor Park [closed Saturdays and Sundays]. The NEQJCC urges the QBPL to open more branches in Northeast Queens on Sundays as the extension of six day service is completed next year. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, c. Sharon Nadel, Executive Director, NEQJCC -30-
