N.E. QUEENS JEWISH COMMUNITY CELEBRATES
CHANUKAH; NEQJCC EVENT, DEC. 8 AT "Y"

The Northeast Queens Jewish Community Council [NEQJCC] together with the Samuel Field/Bay Terrace YM&YWHA, hosts a "Community Wide Chanukah Celebration and Menorah Lighting" on Sunday, December 8, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., announced NEQJCC President Corey Bearak and Y Executive Vice President Steven Goodman. In addition to the free admission NEQJCC Community Menorah Lighting and Chanukah Celebration, including workshops and entertainment, at the Samuel Field Y, 58-20 Little Neck Parkway in Little Neck, the Council notes that each of its 18 member synagogues have programs of interest.

"In addition to the lighting of a Community Menorah, our Chanukah celebration includes Dreidel and Menorah Designing, Chanukah stories, Maccabiah Games, gifts and information on Northeast Queens," advised NEQJCC President Bearak. "Individuals and families interested in northeast Queens, can also obtain information on the neighborhoods served by the Northeast Queens Jewish Community Council including synagogues, housing, public schools and yeshivas, health care, shopping, parks and recreation, and transportation.

Council member synagogues have also reported the following events:

Bay Terrace Jewish Center, 209th Street and Cross Island Parkway (718-428-6363) offers a Chanukah Mispacha Workshop, Thursday, Dec. 5, 11:30 -12:45 p.m., a Chanukah Bazaar, Sunday, December 8, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and performance by its Hebrew School Performance sponsored by the Sisterhood, followed by refreshments, Tuesday, December 10 at 8:00 p.m.

Temple Torah, 54-47 Little Neck Parkway in Little Neck (718-423-1235/ 229-5528) has a paid-up Sisterhood Membership Supper 7:00 p.m., a Family Shabbas Dinner, Friday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m., a Hebrew School Party, Monday December 9 at 4:00 p.m. and a Hebrew School visit to the Little Neck Nursing Home to spread Chanukah cheer, Wednesday December 11.

Temple Sholom, 263-10 Union Turnpike in Floral Park (718-343-8660) hosts a Hanukkah Party, December 7, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. with games, contests and entertainment, including a home-made Menorah and home-made Latkes contests. A Havdalah service follows at 6:16 p.m. A family dinner which requires reservations, follows the service. 

"Council projects include neighborhood development, Jewish Continuity, fostering intergroup understanding and building a multi-cultural coalition," said Mr. Bearak. The Council covers Bay Terrace, Bayside, Bellerose, Douglaston, Floral Park, Glen Oaks, Hollis Hills, Little Neck, New Hyde Park, Oakland Gardens and Queens Village (north).

The Council combats anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination," advised Executive Director Sharon A. Nadel, who described the Council as an association of community, education, fraternal and religious organizations. "The NEQJCC also sponsors forums with major public figures, Jewish Cultural events, open discussions with local Rabbis and represents community concerns."

Upcoming Northeast Queens Jewish Community projects and events include a Purim Carnival, also at the Y next March and the Council's Annual Legislative Breakfast at the Y next April.

A UJA/Federation agency, the NEQJCC works closely with the Queens Jewish Community Council, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater New York and the Samuel Field/ Bay Terrace Y.
